Treat yourself this Shabbat to a beautiful and delicious homemade challah.
We all have our favourite recipes and tricks for making the best challah ever. As much as we find the taste and the look of our challah super important at Oy Vey Amsterdam, our approach in this session is rather one of connection (chibbur) and attention (kavanah).The act of kneading dough is like a meditation and the hard work of kneading serves as a preparation for the rest which will follow. Through making challah together we create connection between one another and to our cultural heritage. No (challah) baking experience needed!

what you will need

  • 1 kilo flour
  • dry (or fresh) yeast
  • 1/2 cup of castersugar
  • 1/2 cup of sunflower or canola oil
  • a pinch of salt
  • 1 egg
  • sesame / poppy seeds (or anything else you would fancy as a topping)
  • a bowl to mix
  • baking sheet / paper
  • baking tray
  • brush (if available, not necessary)
  • oven
